Short eats are stuffed snacks that are usually baked or fried. They are small in size, easy to carry, and can be eaten on the go - giving them the perfect moniker “short eats”. Short eats go well with tea and coffee but you can grab one anytime during the day. They work remarkably well in satisfying midday hunger pangs.
Apart from being a large tea producer, Sri Lanka is famous for its cinnamon, an indispensable ingredient for many of its fabulous foods. It is said to have originated from the teardrop nation and was first found by the Egyptians in 2000 BC. Today, Sri Lanka is still a leading exporter of the world's cinnamon.
Due to its tropical location and varied landscapes, Sri Lanka has a healthy supply of fresh vegetables and luscious fruits throughout the year; they are also organically grown in the rural regions of the country.
Most people in Sri Lanka drink their tea with milk and sugar. Faluda is another popular drink served cold and mixed with syrup, ice cream, jelly pieces, and basil seeds. Fruit juices are a favorite way to beat the heat and Arrach is considered the unofficial distilled national drink by many.
Sri Lanka has two nicknames; the 'pearl of the Indian Ocean' and the 'teardrop of India'. The country gets its first nickname due to its natural beauty, incredible biodiversity, and the precious gemstones that are exported out of the country. Its second nickname is due to the country's location and its shape.
Although Sri Lankan food is similar to south Indian cuisine in its use of chili, cardamom, cumin, coriander, and other spices, it has a distinctive taste and uses ingredients like dried Maldive fish which are local to the area.
The spoken Tamil varieties in Sri Lanka although different from those of Tamil Nadu in India share some common features with the southern dialects of Tamil Nadu. Sri Lankan Tamil dialects retain many words and grammatical forms that are not in everyday use in Tamil Nadu and use many other words slightly differently.
